Maripharm was established in 1995 for the purpose of developing medicines from cannabis. At patients  request, Maripharm supplied Medical Grade Cannabis (MGC) through pharmacists (1995-2003). Because of technical reasons Maripharm wasn't contracted as a provider for government cannabis. Since then the emphasis has been laid on further investigation of cannabis and cannabinoids.
Maripharm is the only ISO-certificated company in the Netherlands that is engaged in cannabis and cannabinoids. The company is authorised for the production as well as the distribution of cannabis. Quality controls and research are very important and are encouraged by Maripharm. Maripharm hopes to come to better research and insight in the components and application of cannabis and cannabinoids.

Production
The standardised cannabis is grown in a closed space by cloning. The cultivation circumstances such as nutrition, temperature, humidity, length and intensity of light and growth are kept stable.
After harvesting the flower tops are dried and packed. The products are sterilised and gamma radiated so they're free of bacteria, germs, pesticides, heavy metals and micro organisms. Samples are sent to the laboratory for inspection and analysis.

Laboratory
Maripharm has its own laboratory but also cooperates with independent, external organisations such as TNO, who analyse the products. In the laboratory the specifications of the cannabinoids are controlled with HPLC and HPTLC-techniques. Products are analysed in cooled and heated conditions where possible applications are taken into consideration.
